School Crossing Patrol Assistant

Salary

€7.75 per hour, plus Cost-of-Living Allowance – COLA.

Eligibility and Candidate Priority

Candidates will be considered according to the following order of priority:

  1. Cypriot nationals who are current internal employees
  2. Cypriot nationals applying externally
  3. UK Family Members with a valid Status Stamp permitting employment
  4. UK nationals

UK Family Member and UK national applications will be considered only when a suitable Cypriot national has not been identified.

Successful UK Family Member or UK national candidates will be offered a one-year Fixed-Term Appointment, subject to the relevant recruitment and appointment policies.

The vacancy is being advertised internally and externally at the same time. Priority will be given to suitable internal applicants.

Applications from individuals who have reached or passed the BFC/SBAA normal retirement age of 65 will not be accepted.

About the Role

The School Crossing Patrol Assistant will be responsible for helping children and other pedestrians cross safely at a designated section of road near RAF Akrotiri Primary School.

The successful candidate will monitor traffic and roadside conditions, manage children’s behaviour at the crossing and operate the relevant warning equipment when required.

The position reports to:

  • FS Families Officer
  • Housing Officer
  • OC EMS

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe passage of children and pedestrians across the designated section of road.
  • Identify and manage daily roadside hazards.
  • Monitor changing traffic conditions and possible obstructions.
  • Operate at pedestrian crossings, including pelican, puffin or toucan crossings, where applicable.
  • Control and manage the behaviour of children waiting at or using the school crossing.
  • Promote safe and responsible road-crossing behaviour.
  • Operate hazard-warning lights when required.
  • Remain alert to risks that may affect the safety of children and other pedestrians.
  • Follow all relevant Health and Safety procedures.
  • Carry out other reasonable duties assigned by the Line Manager.
  • Comply with British Forces Cyprus Equal Opportunities policies.

The indicative division of duties is:

  • Managing roadside hazards, traffic conditions and obstructions: 75%
  • Managing and controlling children’s behaviour at the crossing: 24%
  • Operating hazard-warning lights: 1%

Essential Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understand safeguarding responsibilities relating to children and vulnerable adults.
  • Understand the importance of protecting children’s and vulnerable adults’ personal information.
  • Undergo and successfully pass the required security and police checks.
  • Provide a clean criminal record certificate and a sex offenders certificate issued by the Republic of Cyprus, where required.
  • Undergo and pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check where applicable.
  • Provide clean criminal-record documentation from all countries in which they have lived during the previous five years, where required.
  • Provide a complete employment history.
  • Explain any gaps in employment.
  • Provide suitable professional references.
  • Complete the required criminal-convictions self-declaration form.
  • Be willing to undergo reference, background, online and social-media checks as part of the safer-recruitment process.
